“Unum Stories and Memories” Anniversary Celebrations By Ruth Myer
|
"I Love You
and I'm Not Lion." |
During the time I was working in
Unum, Bill and I instituted a very different wedding anniversary celebration.
Friends of ours have their anniversary the same week as ours and we decided to
celebrate together. We also
agreed that the wives and husbands would alternate planning for a surprise
occasion. We have thoroughly
enjoyed the challenge, the suspense, and ultimately the good time that we always
shared with each other.
We’ve traveled lots of places from Mount Washington to Lake Mooselookmeguntik.
When it was the wives’ turn, it
seemed we were a bit more conservative and planned local outings. We
invited our husbands to dinner at my home. When they arrived we were gone. A
note said to meet us at a
local store. When they arrived there, they each received a gift and were
instructed to go to another
establishment until at last they arrived at Howard Johnson’s where the clerk
handed over two gym bags
and directed them to the pool. We were sitting in the hot tub waiting for them.
Another year we arranged to meet
our husbands in the Mall. When they
arrived at the selected spot, they
found us dressed in animal costumes holding big signs.
I was dressed as a lion with a sign “I love you and
I’m not lion.” My friend was
dressed as a bear with the sign “I can’t bear to be apart from you.”
We created
quite a stir in the Mall that evening especially among the children.
Leaving the Mall for the second part of our
adventure, we shed our costumes and went for a ride through the “tunnel of
love” which was actually the car
wash. After that we took the men for
a moonlight cruise on the Casco Bay.
We just celebrated our 55th anniversary but unfortunately our friends weren’t around.
