UNUM RETIREES -- Volunteers    by Beverly J. Dahms

The Unum Retiree membership was asked to provide the Board with an estimate of the number of hours that they volunteers during the 
period of September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2012.  I am very happy to report and we received responses from about 40 of our members
and the number of volunteer hours reported was 11,847.

Our membership has been very busy over the last year and keep up the good work.  
Some examples of the way that we have helped in our local communities:
Meals on Wheels, hospitals, animal shelters and rescues, schools, churches, libraries, municipalities, museums, senior citizen
activities as local nursing homes, Red Cross agencies, historical societies, local arts and theaters and food pantries.  There are 
also many smaller non-profits that have been supported in our local communities by our membership.

Our Unum Retiree Membership has supported non-profits in Maine, Florida, Georgia, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

I have also received a request from the American Red Cross in Portland.  They have asked me to forward this request to our membership.  
If anyone would like to assist them, please contact her directly.

“We need volunteers every week, Monday - Friday for 2-3 hour shifts. Our volunteers check in blood donors, offer donors 
refreshments after their donations and alert staff if a donor has a question or reaction to donating. We also have a new 
weekly Reception volunteer position fielding phone calls and directing inquiries. Volunteers can be scheduled in pairs or 
individually. Volunteer times range from 7:30am - 7pm. So we offer a lot of variety in scheduling options!"
