Words From the
Chair by Roger Rioux |
If you know of any recent
retirees who may not be aware of the organization, let them know about us and
how they can join by
contacting us through the website: www.unumretirees.org
or contacting Steve Bailey at
846-6648 or sebailey@maine.rr.com.
The annual meeting on September 25th was a huge success; we had 92
retirees attending at the Italian Heritage Center.
The turnout was larger than any in memory. Andrew
Molloy, AVP of Corporate Benefits, presented an update for retiree
medical
benefits for 2013. There will be no changes to any of the plans. Premiums will increase
4.5% for the United Health Care
plans only. There are no premium changes for any of the other plans. There are
no changes to the prescription coverage so
we should all continue with the Unum plan over any of those offered by Medicare
Part D. If you want more information or
contact names see our website: www.unumretirees.org.
Steve
Bailey presented
a Treasurer’s report. The good news is that with the help that Unum provides
we will have enough funds to
take care of next year without collecting any dues from the members.
The list of names for the board of directors was presented and ratified by the members.
Beverly
Dahms
summarized the volunteer hours submitted to her prior to the meeting. 38 members
submitted their hours for a total
of 11,847 hours in 6 different states. They volunteered at local hospitals,
schools, libraries, museums, food pantries, historical societies,
theaters, etc. Please see Beverly’s report later in this newsletter.
Please
keep track of your volunteer hours as you can get up to $500 for your favorite
charity from Unum. Unum will donate $1 per
hour for volunteer work for a 501C3 (non-profit) firm. A minimum of 50 hours is
required, not to exceed 500 hours per 12-month
period (it can be other than a calendar year). A retiree may report volunteered
hours accumulated from a single and/or multiple eligible
organizations and combine those hours to meet the minimum hour (50) requirement.
Only one of the reported organizations may
receive the match Cycle deadlines for reporting hours are June 1, September 1,
and December 1. If you are doing
some volunteer
work for 501C3 organizations, please apply for the service grant from Unum. The
form to fill out is included on Unum Retirees website:
http://www.unumretirees.org/service.html.
A
questionnaire was distributed asking for suggestions for topics for future
meetings. If you think of any ideas or hear a speaker who
you think might be of interest to our members, I would like to hear from
you. We
are looking for your feedback about our activities.
Please email me with any comments or suggestions about how we can make the
organization a better one.
