By Mary Guy

The First Annual Meeting of  “Unum Retirees” (merger of  Headlighters and VALUR) was held
on October 12, 2010, at the Italian Heritage Center, in Portland, with Roger Rioux, presiding.

Following the Social hour and Luncheon, Roger greeted members and guests.  He advised that
we currently have no dues and are subsidized by Unum….Thank You Unum!!

A Roster is maintained by Steve Bailey  (sebailey@maine.rr.com).  Roger introduced the Board:
Roger Rioux, Bob Wooten, M. Ann Waecker, Olin Sawyer, Steve Bailey, Leo Lamoureux, Bob
Anastasoff, Pamela Libby, Beverly Dahms, Mary Guy, Rebecca Bibber and Cheryl Jensen.  He
further advised that a new Website has been set up for Unum Retirees  http://www.unumretirees.org

There are three meetings a year.  For 2011, the winter luncheon will be on February 15th, the picnic
will be on June 21st, and the annual meeting is tentatively set for October  11th.

The special project, “Any Soldier”, thanks to your many donations, enabled the Unum Retirees to
send 7 boxes (over 133 pounds) to three soldiers in Afghanistan; a female medic, a father and son.
The three soldiers shared the many items with other soldiers and with the local population.  We are
considering another such project in June 2011.

Cheryl Jensen reported on the volunteer work being done by Unum Retirees.
UNUM Retirees have been very busy this past year donating many hours out into the communities.
The grand total for this year was 12,681 hours donated from 48 Retirees.
The different groups and places where our UNUM Retirees are donating their time and talent is
varied.  The list includes, but is not limited to Churches, Fraternal Organizations, Nursing Homes,
Local Food Banks and Soup Kitchens, Red Cross, United Way, Veterinary Clinics, Animal Shelters,
MDA, MS, Easter Seals, Libraries, Symphony, Theatre Groups, Youth Alternatives, Blood Bank,
Knitting Groups for the Hospitals and for Cancer Clinics, Linus Project,Community Senior
Organizations, UNUM Blood Bank, National Kidney Foundation, Meals on Wheels, Ruth's Reusable
Resources, Leaning Works, Family Crisis Center, HART, Southern Maine Agency on Aging, Lion's,
Rotary, Victoria Mansion, Eastern Cemetery, Riverton Trolley Park, Historical Societies and local
hospitals.  This is just a small sampling of the places that our retirees are donating their time.
Cheryl indicates that Churches and Religious organizations are getting about 1/3 of the hours ,
about 1/2 to Community agencies and organizations groups and the rest at varied organizations and
fraternal organizations.  Our Retirees have been extremely generous with their time supporting
many agencies and groups that need assistance.

We currently have a membership of 317.  In January we will be sending you a form to Update
Your Membership.  PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO REPLY and RETURN THE COMPLETED
FORM TO US.

Cheryl Jensen discussed the “Any Soldier” project.  She advised that the female medic and the
son, Michael, were still in Afghanistan.  His father is back in the USA.  Cheryl indicated that before
the end of the year, her church will be sending supplies to them.

It was good to see Pam Libby (refer to the July Newsletter) and Mark Andrews (after his major
surgery in June).  They both look great.

Door prizes for a gas credit card was won by Deb Coward, and a lunch at the Olive Garden was
won by Wally Crowell.
