Unum Retirees Begins.

By Roger Rioux.

At the October 6 combined meeting of Headlighters and VALUR, we voted to approve the By-Laws
of the new organization and elected the new board of directors.  With this action Unum Retirees became
a reality.  Please check out the By-Laws and a list of Board Members elsewhere in this newsletter.   The
VALUR Board approved the dissolution of VALUR after the bank account for Unum Retirees is created
and the money from the previous organization can be transferred.  A similar resolution was approved by
the Headlighters board.

At our meeting on November 17, we created a budget for Unum Retirees for the year 2010.  We planned
for next year and began the process for filing for 501c3 designation as a non-profit organization.

Board meetings for 2010 will be in January, March, May, July, September and November.  We will meet
in HOIII at 10:30.  All members are invited to attend.  Please let us know if you plan to attend so we can
arrange with Unum Security for you to get into the meeting room.

In prior years, Unum has provided financial and mailing support to VALUR, and Unum Retirees will
be able to continue to benefit from that generosity.  So Unum Retirees will be getting $3000 from Unum
for 2010.  Also Unum will be providing printing and postage for our mailings.  As a result we have
decided to not charge dues for 2010.  You will get a membership notice in January asking if you wish
to continue your membership in Unum Retirees.  For those who have email, the notice will be emailed
to you.  We encourage you to specify the Internet as your preferred form of communication as that
reduces the overall costs to Unum and the amount of work required to mail.  The Board has to stuff the
envelopes and affix a mailing label.  We recognize that some of you do not have a computer, so we will
continue with the mail option for communication.

Luncheons (and picnic) are planned for February, June, and October.  The February luncheon will be
at Keeley the Caterer.  We will mail invitations in January.   The June Picnic will be at Two Lights State
Park on a date to be determined.  The Annual Meeting will be on October 12 at the Italian Heritage
Center.  We will be asking you to pay for some of the costs of the luncheons.

We expect to be able to subsidize some of the costs to you.   We will be deciding how much of the costs
we can subsidize during the budgeting process and based on the estimates for responses to the
invitations.

We will produce a Newsletter in March, July and November.  As always, we would like for you to
consider an article or suggestions for the Newsletter.

We will continue to encourage volunteerism among our members, but we want to emphasize that we
encourage all forms of volunteering, not just with the organizations that we have a connection with.
We will recognize all volunteerism at our annual meeting.  In the past this may not have been clear.
Where VALUR was focused on volunteerism, Unum Retirees’ primary mission is social.

The formation of Unum Retirees marks the end of two organizations that served us well.
We are planning for similar service in the future.
