Words From the
Chair by Roger Rioux |
If
you know of any recent retirees who may not be aware of the organization, let
them know about us and how they can join by contacting us
through the website: www.unumretirees.org
or contacting Steve Bailey at

Winter
Luncheon -- 72 retirees gathered at the Best Western Merry Manor Inn in South
Portland to renew friendships and enjoy a
delicious meal. Roger Rioux encouraged attendees to look around to see who may
not have come because of transportation issues.
He encouraged everyone to offer a ride to those who may not be able to
attend because they can no longer drive.
The
next meeting is scheduled for June
18 at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth. He let everyone know that
you can drive
right up to the picnic area so you won’t have to walk up the hill to the
pavilion. Invitations will be mailed in Late May.
We
are looking for your feedback about our activities. Please email me with
any comments or suggestions about how we can make
the organization a better one. rrioux@maine.rr.com
After
lunch, Roger introduced our speaker, Debbie
(DiDominicus) Carr from the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA). Debbie is
the Deputy Director and spoke about the agency and some of their future plans.
For
more than 35 years, the agency has served as the area’s leading resource on
information, programs and services to improve the
well-being of seniors living in Cumberland and York counties. Founded in 1973,
under the authority of the Federal Older Americans
Act, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging is a non-profit organization dedicated
to planning and implementing social services for
adults age 60 and older. They also help people under 60 who may have
disabilities and who can be helped by their programs.
The
Agency’s programs and services are designed to foster independence,
reduce the burden on family and caregivers and promote
an active and healthy lifestyle. They have over 80 full-time staff and 1,200
volunteers who help connect many thousands of seniors
and their families with the appropriate programs and services they need to help
them live healthy, active and independent lives.
The
agency runs an adult day center in Saco and plans to open another in the future.
The location at 333 Lincoln Street, Saco will be
expanding to a new facility. They will be able to offer more services to
seniors.
They
are looking for volunteers and offer services in the following areas:
§ Help
seniors with bill paying and everyday bookkeeping.
§ Become
trained to help others with Medicare and other health insurance options.
§ Facilitate
classes on health and wellness.
§ Deliver
Meals on Wheels.
§ Special
events like Maine Senior Games
§ Help
lead activities at Truslow Adult Day Health Center in Saco.
§ Helping
residents of assisted living or other communities for older adults
The
Southern Maine Agency on Aging is one of five Agencies on Aging that serves the
state of Maine. If you live in Maine, but do
not live in Cumberland or York County, you can access their website ( http://www.smaaa.org/
) which contains a link to other agencies
in Maine and around the country.
