Message from the UNUM RETIREES’ Chair by Roger Rioux

We now have 320 members, up from 303 a year ago.  If you know of any recent retirees who may not be aware of the
organization, please let them know about us and how they can join by contacting us through the website:
www.unumretirees.org.

In January you all received a membership notice for the year 2011. You only need to reply if any of your information has
changed. We are keeping all members on the list unless we hear from you about a change in status.

The next luncheon is the picnic scheduled for June 21 at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth. There will be no
charge to attend and you will be receiving an invitation in May. As in previous years there will be great food and lots of
games.

We have decided to repeat the mailing to soldiers in Afghanistan. Thanks to your generosity, the Unum Retirees sent
7 boxes weighing more than 133 pounds to three soldiers in Afghanistan last year. Many of our members brought
items to the picnic and we were able to pick up items from those who were not able to get to the luncheon.  Members
of the board met to pack the boxes and mailed them to a female medic and two men, a father and son, who were in
Afghanistan.  The boxes included a lot of hygiene products, food, Beanie babies, games, books, CDs and DVDs.
The three soldiers shared the items with other soldiers and with the local population.  Thank you for your contributions.
We will send a reminder about the mailing with the invitations to the picnic. If you know of any soldiers who will be in
the war zones as of August and you would like us to send packages to them, please let me know.

We need more board members as a few people have decided to “retire” from service. Please consider joining us for
a future meeting with the board to get a sense of what we do. We all share in the work and the work is relatively low
stress. You can come to check it out without any obligation or pressure. Our 2011 meetings are May 24, July 12,
September 6 and November 15. All meetings are in HO III and start at 10:30. After the meetings, those who can, go
out for a light lunch. Please let me know if you are coming so we can inform security.
